Derby Business School Student Profiles Louise Owen-McGee

“My course has equipped me to be more confident in my role and has demystified a lot of management jargon”

Louise won The Pennine Healthcare award for Best Part Time Postgraduate Student for 2009. She studied the MBA part time.

Winning the award

I'm deeply honoured to receive this award. This is my third qualification from the University and this achievement has made it the most meaningful. I really wanted to do well, especially after a break from my studies to become a mum. For me the award reflects my determination that the time I spent studying would make my husband and daughter proud!

Why Derby?

I chose Derby because the Business School has a very good reputation and because I both live and work within the city. The flexibility of the course in offering afternoon or evening lectures also enabled me to fit my studies around both my work and family commitments.

The foundation for my career

I initially graduated from Derbyshire College of Higher Education as a Graphic Designer and have since used my studies at Derby to develop my skills and evolve professionally. The qualifications I've gained from the University have each in turn bolstered my professional confidence and enabled me to move forwards in my career.

Putting what I've learned into practice

I'm the Creative Manager at MHA, a nationwide charity. My current role sees me managing the production of all the charity's corporate communications, everything from fundraising appeals to business stationery. My course has equipped me to be more confident in my role and has demystified a lot of management jargon! Also as my thesis explored MHA's charity brand I have gained a wealth of insight and fresh ideas to implement in order to raise the organisation's profile.

What would you advise potential students?

I would encourage you and say to go for it one hundred percent. I was very worried about the time commitment involved as a working mum, but due to the afternoon/evening lecture options I was able to fit everything in. I met lots of like-minded people, all wanting to succeed and everyone was so positive and encouraging.

"Pennine Healthcare is pleased to be associated with the award for Best Full Time Postgraduate Student and offers congratulations to Louise. We wish her every success with her chosen career."
