A new addition to the family can be daunting and produce a sense of intrusion, especially with the new member being an adult male. For me this new change in my family dynamic came in the form of my mother’s new partner and the physical changes he brought about to the home environment.

At first this change was odd and unsettling, as this was the house I had grown up in and lived in for the past seventeen years. However, I began to understand that these contributions from this person helped support my mother, both emotionally and physically.

This work is a reflection upon the transition of my family home, from rooms and spaces that were once familiar, that now seem unfamiliar due to the work being undertaken by my mother’s new partner. It is also a vehicle to explore my adjustment to these circumstances and my appreciation and respect towards this new family member.
