Frequently Asked Questions

Due to the current disruption in testing we will temporarily accept some alternatives to the standard IELTS test for most courses. We will accept the IELTs Indicator or TOEFL Online if available in your country. Both of these tests can be taken from home on a desktop or laptop computer.

We are working closely with Governments and exam providers to agree a solution. We will be in contact as soon as we can to provide an update.

It may be possible to defer, but we will need to review individual requests at the time that they are made. Our decision will depend on the University’s policy and latest Government guidance. Please be aware that deferral by a semester is not possible on all courses, as some only have one start date a year.

There is an extension on the guarantee from the end of July to the end of August. During the COVID period your contract terms will be adjusted to provide maximum flexibility. We will keep you updated with any changes.

Our new term will start on Monday 21 September, with most teaching due to begin on Monday 28 September. As you would expect, we will be putting in place clear social distancing plans for all settings.

Our plans for you:

  • Regular on-campus contact time in small teaching groups, tutorials, practical and laboratory sessions
  • Online and remote alternatives to large lectures during the first semester
  • A range of campus amenities will be open, with the necessary social distancing arrangements in place
  • A full induction programme, including extra-curricular activities, organised with social distancing in mind
  • Flexible accommodation contracts, so that students don’t need to worry about paying for any weeks that they can’t live in halls due to the pandemic
  • Provide accommodation and support for international students if any form of quarantine is in place as you arrive in the UK, should the policy remain in place
  • Finally, we will support you if, for any reason, you are not comfortable coming onto campus in September.

Please note that these plans could change, depending on how the Covid-19 situation develops, and subject to government guidance.

We recommend that you keep to the terms of your offer, however, should you have specific issues please do contact our admissions team to further discuss.

You can find up to date advice on travelling to the UK as a student on the UKCISA website or here, as well as more details about what happens when you arrive on the government website. You can find information about visa requirements here or contact our dedicated Visa and Immigration Officer on visas@derby.ac.uk.

As of 8 June, the UK government is asking all arrivals to the UK to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival. You can find more details here. This policy is being reviewed every three weeks, so it is not known if the requirement will still be in place in September, or whether it will apply to arrivals from all countries.  However please be assured that the University of Derby will support students through this time if any form of quarantine is in place when you arrive in the UK, and we are reviewing various accommodation options should the policy remain in place.
