Student praying in the church

Buxton has a wealth of student-friendly churches. The University campus itself doesn’t have a chapel, but we gather for prayers and sandwiches (provided by the Chaplaincy) every Tuesday, 12.30 to 1pm in room DO/115, off the Dome balcony. It’s brief and informal, and we encourage folk to send in prayer requests for anything that’s concerning them. Please join us – you’ll be very welcome! Our small prayer room (CL306) is also open all the time for staff and students to use.

For important times like Remembrance Day, and for the Carol Service, we gather in the Dome.  For Ascension Day, we try to get as high as we can and hold a short service in the Dome Bell Tower, from which we blow bubbles to symbolise our ascending prayers.  There’s always something going on, so keep in touch through our Facebook Group (search for Buxton - University of Derby Chaplaincy)!

When teaching ends in the summer, we invite students to join us on a 48-hour retreat in an inspirational setting, when we focus on our relationship with God.  Students enjoy being the guests of the Franciscans at Hilfield Friary in beautiful Dorset (see picture right). It's a great place for prayer, reflection and joining in with the daily life of the community.
