Meet The Team
The Mineral Products Team comprises of:
Mark Osbaldeston – Head of Centre for Mineral Products
Originally a Mechanical/Mining Engineer with British Coal. He moved to Hanson in 1995 & graduated with a BEng in Quarry & Road Construction from the University of Leeds in 1998.
During an exceptional career with Hanson, Mark worked in a number of operational & management roles.
In 2005 Mark joined the IQ as their Educational Lead where his role involved close work with the team at Doncaster College delivering the Industry’s professional qualifications.
Mark joined the University of Derby in 2007 as the Provision Leader for the Quarry & Asphalt programmes & then became the Head of the Centre for Mineral Products in 2012.
Mark is a member of the IQ, an associate member of the IAT & through his Post Grad qualification in learning & teaching, Mark is also a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Rob Donnelly – Mineral Extractives Programmes Leader
In his previous role Rob was the Head of Estates for Ibstock Building Products and in addition Rob has been a Partner/Director of Geoplan Consultancy, Operations Services Director for Hanson Building Products, Landfill Manager and Senior Geologist at Hanson. Rob has a PhD from the University of Wales.
Rob’s role is the Academic Lead for all of the Centre’s Mineral Extractives programmes.
In addition, Rob lectures in a wide variety of areas throughout all of the Centre’s programmes and Rob also brings a considerable amount of research experience that allows him to contribute and add value to the Centre.

Dr Andy Smith – Cement, Concrete and Clay Programmes Leader
Andy is an Industrial Minerals Geologist by training who has worked in, or as a consultant in the mineral products sector his entire career.
Previously Andy was a staff member at Leicester University (where he obtained his PhD in Concrete Tech), the Head of Research & Technical Development at Hanson Brick and for the last 13 years a Principle Consultant at Ceram (now Lucideon).
Andy’s role is Academic Lead for all of the Centre’s Clay, Concrete and Cement programmes. In addition, Andy lectures in a wide variety of areas throughout all of the Centre’s programmes and Andy also brings a good research track record that allows him to contribute and add value to the Centre.

Helen Bailey - Senior Lecturer Materials and Asphalt & Pavement Technology
Helen's previous role was Technical Development Manager with TRL. In addition, Helen was a Senior Project Manager at Gaia Enviro Tech and a Research Manager with Aggregate Industries.
Helen’s PhD is from the University of East London and her first class BEng is from the University of Leeds.
Helen’s role is Lead Lecturer for a number of the Centres Asphalt & Pavement and Materials modules such as, Asphalt Technology, Pavement Solutions and Construction Products Technology. In addition, Helen’s track record in terms of research adds further value to the Centre.

Chris Rowan - Asphalt & Pavements Programme Leader & Senior Mineral Products Technology
Chris’s wide, varied and in depth experience of the International Mineral Products sector is impressive, (35 years international and multi-cultural, which can only add value to our increasing international market).
Until recently Chris was the Quarries, Asphalt and Concrete Manager for Dantata & Sawoe Construction (Nigeria). In addition, Chris has undertaken similar roles in Zambia, Qatar, UAE, Oman and the UK. Chris is a graduate of the Doncaster College of Minerals and Mining and in addition he studied Materials Technology at the University of Leeds.
Chris’s role is academic Lead for Asphalt & Pavements and support Lecturer for a wide range of the Centres modules.

Bill Taylor – Higher Apprenticeship Programme Leader & Senior Lecturer Mineral Products Technology
Bill’s wide, varied and in depth experience of the International Mineral Products sector is also very impressive, (40 years UK, New Zealand and Australia – underground and surface mineral extraction).
Until recently, Bill was employed as a Geography teacher (UK), prior to this role he was the Underground Mine Manager at Crinum Mine (AUS), an Inspector of Coal Mines/Senior Mining Advisor (AUS & NZ), a Works Manager with Tilcon and United Glass and a Mine Official with British Coal. Additionally, Bill holds an MSc in Geomorphology and a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education.
Bill’s role is academic Lead for our Higher Apprenticeships and support Lecturer for a wide range of the Centres modules.

Tony Stock – Senior Lecturer Asphalt & Pavement Technology
Tony joined the University in 2008 as the Programme Leader for Asphalt Technology. With over 40 years experience in Road Construction, Design & Academia Tony has a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
In a long and varied career Tony has contributed as a consultant to several prestigious projects such as the widening of the M25 and M1 motorways, design of the Athens Motorway Pavement and work on several airfield projects.
In addition Tony was a Team Leader within BP’s R&D department and has held academic posts at the University of Sheffield and University of Dundee.
Tony’s role is Lead for the work based project elements of all our programmes & senior lecturer in Pavement Management & Design.
