Building smarter safety systems

The project focused on the development of a gamified platform to assess the maturity of Safety Management Systems (SMS) using the Risk Management Maturity Model (RM3) methodology. The platform was designed to help businesses identify weaknesses, determine next steps for improvement, and enhance the overall maturity of their SMS through structured, collaborative assessments.

Objectives

• Deliver a robust RM3-based assessment tool with document upload, score visualisation, verification processes, and evidence protection.
• Build a simple, intuitive, and accessible user interface that makes the assessment process efficient and enjoyable.
• Enable multiple users to contribute collaboratively, supported by gamified features such as leaderboards to drive participation.
• Ensure the system meets legal, industry, and data protection standards, safeguarding sensitive information.
• Design features with inclusivity in mind, particularly ensuring usability for colourblind users and others requiring additional support.

Impact delivered

The KTP provided essential resources, including expert supervision, and tailored training opportunities, accelerating technical development and ensuring the platform’s long-term sustainability and potential for growth.

• Prototype Development: A proof-of-concept was developed early, allowing for iterative refinement based on feedback from QSS and University partners.
• Enhanced Skills & Knowledge Transfer: The associate received tailored training at the university and attended Innovate UK delivered management development at Ashorne Hill.
• Continuous Improvement: Regular weekly and monthly review meetings ensured objectives remained aligned with evolving project needs, with LMC (Local Management Committee) oversight guiding scope adjustments.
• Collaboration & Networking: The associate engaged with other KTP associates across the university, sharing best practices and problem-solving strategies to strengthen delivery.
• Future Sustainability: Beyond the immediate platform, the project has identified potential for additional features and future research initiatives, including leveraging collected data for organisational insights.

This collaboration has provided QSS Group Ltd with a unique and innovative tool that differentiates them in the market, while the University of Derby has strengthened its applied research and civic mission by supporting industry with impactful digital solutions. The associate has also benefited from significant professional development, preparing them for future leadership roles in technology and safety management.
