Developing leadership and STEM skills in your business

If you are a small-to-medium-sized business (SME) in Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire, you can benefit from two new programmes. One focuses on helping develop leadership and management skills within your business, while the other improves the STEM skills (science, technology, engineering and maths) of your employees.

Free to eligible SMEs

Both programmes are free to SMEs based within Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire. This is possible thanks to funding from the European Social Fund and the delivery partners, which include Nottingham Trent University (which leads the project), University of Derby, Derby College, Nottingham College, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, Enable, and the Workers’ Educational Association.

The Smart and Inclusive Leadership Programme (SAIL)

What is it?

SAIL is a series of qualifications from basic skills through to advanced levels of accredited higher education. These qualifications can help you develop contemporary leadership and management skills within your business, which can drive productivity, growth and competitiveness.

Who is it for?

SAIL is for your employees who are in supervisory and management positions as well as those you have identified as potential future leaders. It doesn't matter if they are new to management or an experienced manager looking to update their skillset.

For those who don't have any relevant management qualifications or are new to formal executive education, SAIL can be an excellent gateway to further qualifications, such as an MBA or MSc.

What does it cover?

It covers different approaches to leadership and management, including:

It also considers the environmental and social changes taking place in the UK.

How do people learn?

Through blended learning, including practical-focussed workshops and seminars with other professionals, which allow people to discuss and share their experiences. It also includes mentoring and coaching support.

As well as gaining practical advice that they can use immediately in their roles, people will also have time for self-reflection and personal development.

When does it start?

The SAIL programme will begin after Easter 2021. To find out more, please use our enquiry form.

STEM skills workshops

What are they?

The Branch out in STEM project consists of a series of workshops for small-to-medium sized businesses who need to build skills in areas such as data, digital and maths. We want to help you develop a more productive and competitive business, by giving your employees vital contemporary skills such as in data analytics and data science.

Who are they for?

Any employee that needs to reskill or adapt to changes in their role.

What do they cover?

The workshop series will cover key topics that are relevant to our region and that directly relate to employee performance and productivity at work, such as:

There will be a focus on raising confidence in maths because it's common for people to feel 'maths anxiety'. This has been identified as a major barrier to people developing STEM skills.

We will also be consulting with businesses in the next few months about what topics they would like to see covered, so we can make sure our workshop programme meets the needs of employers in the region.

When and where will the workshops take place?

Starting in Summer 2021, the workshops will take place as face-to-face sessions at our campuses in Derby and Chesterfield.

Most workshops will be 3 hours in length, although some topics may require a longer session.

We will aim to vary the days and times of these workshops, to allow as many people to participate as possible. To see the workshop schedule when it becomes available, please fill in our enquiry form

Part of the High Level Skills programme

Both projects form part of the High Level Skills programme, which has provided support to over 700 businesses and 1,500 individuals working for SMEs since 2018. It has helped these businesses to access graduate talent, higher and degree apprenticeships, and high level vocational training and skills.
