DE-Carbonise Project

The DE-Carbonise project has been created to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increase their sustainability and save money by reducing energy costs and carbon emissions. The project is a collaboration between the University of Derby, Derby City and Derbyshire County Councils.

Eligibility criteria

DE-Carbonise is a three year collaboration between the University of Derby, Derby City and Derbyshire County Councils that started in November 2019. The collaboration is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and follows on from the successful D2 Energy Efficiency/Low Carbon project.

Dedicated technical, research and business support

DE-Carbonise offers a comprehensive programme of assistance for SMEs seeking to reduce their carbon emissions in operations, production and supply chain. 

Participating businesses are introduced to a lead contact to discuss their needs and offer support throughout the programme. This would typically include:

Our technical research team from The Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE) will identify, analyse, and consider a range of decarbonisation options based on your individual business requirements. Projects usually fall into one of the following themes:

  • Modal shift
  • Electric Vehicles

  • Journey to zero emission vehicles and future fuels
  • Renewables

  • Air change and refrigeration assessment

Other IISE research interests include carbon capture and storage (CCS), thermodynamic analysis, HVAC, energy storage, housing retrofit, solid oxide fuel cells and energy materials. We are also happy to discuss any ideas/ opportunities that you may have.

Supply chain and process improvement

Our academic team in the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences can offer cohort-based support for supply chain and process improvement. The team provides a fully funded tailored programme for SMEs to support the reduction of emissions, resulting in better environmental performance and a positive environmental impact.

Council support

Derby City and Derbyshire County Councils will provide carbon reduction audits, technical support and grants for site carbon reduction measures including:

Grants between £1,000 and £20,000 are available in Derby.

The grant covers 40% of the total cost of works (ex VAT), depending on the carbon saving.

Continued support during challenging times

DE-Carbonise had continued to work with businesses throughout the pandemic, to reduce carbon emissions, save costs and become more sustainable. This support has helped businesses to increase their resilience for the future.
