Smartphone Photography Workshop
Date: 30th November 2017
Time: 2-5pm
Location: Britannia Mill, University of Derby

How to take a good photo just by using your mobile phone.
This workshop is to help those wanting to capture quality images for business use, including product photography and for use in promotional materials, without having to go to the expense and training of using more complex cameras.

Led by Lecturer Mark Hall.

Imaginise Workshop
Date: 1st February 2018
Time: Morning Session @ 9.30am or Evening Session @ 5pm
Duration: 3 hours
Location: Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

As creative practitioners working in a busy world, thought processes can become cluttered and slow moving. Creative Block and being unable to form new ideas can affect self-esteem, motivation and business growth and reach. This hands on workshop will introduce you to different methods of problem solving, generating ideas and concepts along with creative thinking.
You are welcome to bring a ‘sticking point’ or problem with you for the group to ‘Imaginise’ if you wish and there will be opportunity for group discussion and networking.

Guided workshop led by our Academic Lead, Bev Reardon.

Overview Tour of Facilities at the School of Arts
Date: 12th September 2017
Time: 5pm
Duration: Approximately 3 hours
Location: School of Arts, Markeaton Street, Derby and associated facilities

The tour aims to provide an overview and help attendees understand more about the facilities available at the University of Derby's School of Arts including Art, Design, Media and Performing arts, Fashion and Textiles, Printmaking, Ceramics and Fine Art Facilities. This will be put into context of how attendees could utilise the facilities and expertise available when putting together their bespoke support package.

Next tour date will be a morning session in November – date to be confirmed.


Digital Design Hub Workshop - Introduction to Laser Cutting
Date: 19th September 2017
Time: 1.30pm
Duration: 3 hours
Location: Digital Design Hub, Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

This will cover setting files and a demonstration of the machines capability, including a cut file and etch file. Note. This is in relation to laser cutting of paper, fabric and card only. In order for attendees to get the full potential out of the session, they must have a knowledge and ability to use Photoshop, Illustrator or CorelDraw as these will not be covered during the workshop.


Digital Design Hub Workshop - Introduction to Digital Textile Printers

Date: 21st September 2017
Time: 9.30am
Duration: 3 hours
Location: Digital Design Hub, Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

This will cover the use of and a demonstration of the 2 machines capabilities:

  • Mimaki Printer for Natural Fabrics
  • Sublimation Printer for Synthetic Fabric and Prepared /Coated Objects

In order for attendees to get the full potential out of the session, they must have a knowledge and ability to use Photoshop, Illustrator or CorelDraw as these will not be covered during the workshop.


Digital Design Hub Workshop - Introduction to UV Printer
Date: 21st September 2017
Time: 1.30pm
Duration: 3 hours
Location: Digital Design Hub, Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

This will cover the use of and a demonstration of the UV printer and printing onto objects with a flat surface (no need to prepare surface):
In order for attendees to get the full potential out of the session, they must have a knowledge and ability to use Photoshop, Illustrator or CorelDraw as these will not be covered during the workshop.


Artists in Business Showcase
Date: 5th October 2017
Time: 5pm until 6.30pm
Duration: 90 minutes
Location: Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

To provide creative and digital businesses the opportunity to find out more about how the University facilities can be used through the Big House and AA2A projects (Artists Access to Art Colleges). It will also allow the opportunity of networking between AA2A artists and a business audience, as well as showcasing artwork.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Effective Design and Typography for Posters and Related Media
Date: 16th October 2017
Time: 10am until 3pm with 1 hour for lunch
Location: Markeaton Street Site, University of Derby

Simple rules of design can give an instant impact with professional results.
Poor design and layout can mean the message is confused, lost or even ignored.

The aim of this workshop is to help small businesses and sole traders from the creative and digital industry to understand how to design effective posters, flyers and related marketing materials.

This workshop is of value to those who wish to design their own posters, flyers and communications but also for those who enlist the services of a commercial company, ensuring a good understanding of the design process and enabling clear communication with printers and designers. 

The session will cover the following aspects:

  • Effective use of space and layout. Golden proportion and the rule of thirds
  • Typography - Simple and effective tips on style, size and placement
  • Resolution: File resolution for print files and web files 
  • File format: Correct file format for both print and web
  • Photo resolution and scaling for both print and web

This is a small group workshop - only a few spaces available.

Storytelling for Business Workshop

Time: Full day (9.30am until 4.30pm)
Location: Derby Conference Centre

The information age is coming to an end; people are looking to connect beyond facts and figures. People are now searching for brands that connect with them on an emotional level. That's where brand storytelling comes in. By looking at your brand as a story you'll learn to connect with customers in one of the emotional marketplaces, you'll learn how to use story structure to bring your presentations, web copy and marketing to life and you'll develop a deeper understanding of who you are and how you can build brand loyalty from with your customers.
