University celebrates international graduations

International Partner Graduation Ceremonies

Vakalo Art & Design College

Representatives from the University of Derby, including Head of Design David McGravie, and Assistant Subject Manager for Design Tracy Tomlinson, attended the graduation ceremony of students from the Vakalo Art & Design College, one of the University's international partners.

The ceremony took place on Sunday, 19 February 2017, in Athens, Greece, at the Conference Hall of the highly acclaimed National Physics Research Centre “Democritus”. Fifty-six students received their MA or BA (Hons) degrees from the programmes of Visual Communication, Architectural Design, Graphic Design, and Interior Design.

Addressing the audience, both David McGravie and Dr. Daniel Gounaridis, Vakalo College Director of Studies, made a special reference on the close and successful collaboration between the two institutions. Dr. Gounaridis also mentioned that the Vakalo, as of next September will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Vakalo with a series of events and projects.

On the event of the graduation, Vakalo Dean Pantelis Tsavalos added: “Once again the graduation ceremony was a very happy occasion; it is always a great joy to see students celebrate their achievement together with their families, friends and teachers. It is a very satisfying justification of all the hard work of both students and colleagues, and it is like a harbinger, in this difficult period we are going through, of a brighter future.”

Botswana Accountancy College

Prof. Kathryn Mitchell, Dr Sarah Rawlinson and Richard Hucker represented the University of Derby at graduation ceremony at Botswana Accountancy College. This took place on Saturday 3rd December 2016 at the BAC campus in Gaborone.There were 667 graduates from BAC on the day. There were University of Derby graduates from UG Business and Accounting programmes, MBA, MSc Strategic Management and UG Tourism, Salon and Hospitality programmes. That evening Botswana Accountancy College also held an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the College.

BAC International, Bangladesh

The Second Convocation Ceremony took place on December 11th 2016 attended by Prof. Phillip Plowden and Carlton McDonald at the National Museum, Shahbag.  Students graduated from the following programmes BA (Hons) Business Administration (Top Up) (26), BA (Hons) Law (Top Up) (25), Bsc (Hons) Information Technology (Top Up) (04) and LLM (11)

SHMS and IHTTI, Switzerland

On Friday 27th January 2017 two award ceremonies were held with our partner institution the School of Hotel Management IHTTI and the Swiss Hotel Management School, SHMS in Switzerland. On the morning of the 27th University of Derby attendees Prof. Judith Lamie and Dr Sarah Rawlinson processed through Neuchâtel with the IHTTI graduates to the Chateau de Neuchâtel where the ceremony took place. There were 45 students who returned to Neuchâtel to receive their bachelor’s degree in International Hospitality & Design Management from the University of Derby.

In the evening the second ceremony of the day took place for SHMS at Caux Palace, a former palace hotel high up above Montreux. Out of the 177 graduate eligible to graduate 64 returned to Switzerland for the event and accepted their awards from Prof. Judith Lamie and Dr Sarah Rawlinson. Graduates were awarded Bachelor’s degrees in Hospitality and Events Management Programmes. There were also graduates from the MSc in International Hospitality Management programme where this year there had been record numbers graduating with merits and distinctions. The evening ended with a champagne reception for guests in the grand hall at Caux Palace with a stunning firework display overlooking Lake Geneva.

Mediterranean College

Mediterranean College held their graduation ceremonies at both of their locations week commencing 20th February 2017. Mediterranean College had graduates from a wide range of courses at both ceremonies, UG and PG Business, UG and PG computing, UG and PG Education, PG Psychotherapy, UG Psychology, UG Culinary Arts, UG Engineering programmes.

The first ceremony was held in Athens at the Hellenic Cosmos, Cultural Centre on the evening of Monday 20th February. Prof. Kath Mitchell and Gail Thrippleton represented the University at this event. Prof. Mitchell presented 170 University of Derby graduates with their awards. That evening the keynote speaker was Dr John Kalogerakis, CEO, JMK – Anthropocentric Corporate Training and Development.

The second ceremony was held in Thessaloniki at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall on the evening on Thursday 23rd February. Gail Thrippleton represented the University at this event where 55 University of Derby graduates accepted their awards at both bachelor’s and master’s level. The keynote speaker at the Thessaloniki ceremony was Spiros Pengas, Deputy Manager for Tourism and International Relations, City of Thessaloniki.
