Everything is falling into place for The University of Derby to make the most of its unique offering in the global market, says Lew Wernick, who has been appointed as its first Head of International Recruitment and Collaborations.

The new post brings existing teams together under one leadership for the first time as the University develops a three to five year plan for growth in the international sector as part of the current re-structuring.

“I’m delighted to be here and I’m taking on board a lot of great ideas and things people want to see happen,” said Lew, who has worked in international recruitment management for many years in consultancies and colleges.

Lew has already identified target regions, especially in emerging economies whose growing middle classes are fuelling demand.

“Derby has a lot to offer,” said Lew, who will build on the fact that it is safe and less expensive than cities such as London, and scores very highly on student experience. The University’s International Student Centre has twice been voted Number 1 in the UK for the way its supports its international students.

“It’s in a nice location, and is very easy to access from nearly every region in the UK,” he said.

“It also has some quite nice niche products which a lot of the world doesn’t know about. Daily I’m finding out about new and interesting ones.

“Now things are falling into place and we have a lot of good people who are coming together with a focussed attitude about how to progress,” said Lew.
