Research and Scholarship Conference, 17 May 2017

Higher Education teaching, support staff and students gathered for the second East Midlands College HE Scholarship and Research Conference in Leicester on 17 May.

The conference was an opportunity for students and lecturers from a number of colleges across the region to share and celebrate examples of scholarly activity. Building on the success of the first conference in Nottingham in 2016, invitations were extended to all colleges in the AoC regional college group and there was a fantastic turnout with around 100 delegates and presenters in attendance.

Dr Jonathan Eaton, Head of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Teeside University delivered the morning’s keynote address, considering the critical role colleges have to play in addressing current and future challenges in a ‘supercomplex’ world, and transcending perceived barriers between academic institutions and the communities they serve.

Throughout the day a range of scholarship projects were highlighted including individual research projects from Derby College students on the Foundation Degree Animal Management and Hospitality courses, Central College Sports Coaching students and Leicester College HE student ambassadors. Staff sessions included thematic course design, addressing and managing challenging behaviour in College HE, improving employer engagement with course design and delivery and inspiring progression through scholarship.

A talk on Emotional Intelligence from Gobinder Gill, Birmingham Metropolitan College, proved very popular, encouraging staff and students to reflect on how self-awareness can enhance performance.

Derby College is part of a consortium of colleges involved in the AoC Scholarship Project. This national project supports the development of a distinct College HE scholarly ethos by creating a scholarship framework, which is firmly centred on enhancing the learning experience for students.
