Reflecting on 2021

2021 was my first full year as a University of Derby student. 2022 is fast approaching so I think it’s time to reflect on the past 12 months.

Getting to know the city

When 2021 began, I had only lived in Derby for four months. Now, I have had the pleasure of living in this brilliant city for over a year. I have enjoyed exploring new places to eat, drink and shop. My favourite restaurant has quickly become The Hideout. Trust me it’s worth a visit, their burgers are unreal.

Learning how to be independent

When returning to Derby after the Christmas holidays, I was ready for my independence. I have loved learning to cook and clean. During my second year at university, I have learned how to negotiate renting a house with my friends.

Balancing your time

Your timetable is not as structured when you are at university, and it is your choice how you spend your spare time. Remember, it is important to balance your university work and social life. Make sure you still meet your deadlines on time.

Success on my course

I had just submitted my first two essays when 2021 began. Since then, I have received lots of fantastic grades and worked on many more interesting modules. The biggest change to my university experience was adjusting to face-to-face teaching in September 2021. Admittedly it took some time to get used to big lectures and lively seminars. However, now I thoroughly enjoy the interactive learning provided by my lecturers.

Gained lots of work experience

I have had the opportunity to take part in numerous marketing internships this year. The Careers website is regularly updated with a wide variety of student jobs. Perhaps, you should look through the live jobs posting if you are looking for employment next term. I currently work as a Social Media Assistant for the University. During my last semester, I learnt how to successfully manage my time between university and my part-time job. These skills will be very useful when progressing with my degree and future career.

Made lots of new friends

I am very grateful I got the time to meet a range of people this year. University is a fantastic place to meet new people. I’d recommend joining a society to help build new friendships. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there; remember you are never too far along with your university journey to make new friends.

Overall, I have had a fantastic time at university in 2021. The year has had its moments of stress and tension. However, at the end of the day, I am extremely proud of what I have achieved this year. I am very excited to see what my next year at the University of Derby will bring.
