Apprentice success at E.ON

Cerys Goodson’s experience on a degree apprenticeship at Derby resulted in her securing a permanent position at E.ON as well as winning the Apprenticeship Ace award.

Cerys achieved a first-class honours in our Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship programme. She chose this route to achieve a qualification whilst gaining workplace experience. Along the way, she has applied her academic skills within the business environment.

"The apprenticeship opened so many doors to me. I most enjoyed applying my academic learning to the on the job training as it really brought everything to life."

Workplace opportunities

Cerys enjoyed travelling to different locations and countries whilst on the apprenticeship. Cerys believes that these opportunities reflect the value of a degree apprenticeship.

I received promotions leading to increased responsibility and most recently international travel and relocation. My most recent promotion was offered with the support of the degree apprenticeship being valued and viewed very highly.

Learning about the industry

Studying a degree apprenticeship was an essential aspect of Cerys’ development as it enabled her to understand the breadth of E.ON’s operations by learning about key business functions. As well as improving her industry expertise, this also developed Cerys’ communication skills.

The apprenticeship supported my overall business knowledge and capabilities due to the academic modules covering most key business functions and operations," she says. "This provided me with a greater understanding of how the business operates as a whole rather than just specific areas. It has also improved my communication skills and networking capabilities."

Achieving awards

Cerys’ success as an apprentice led to her achieving the Apprenticeship Ace award in E.ON’s Apprenticeship Awards 2023. She has also been nominated as “Apprentice of the Year” in the Generation Next Awards 2024 , which recognises a young professional’s bright future and commitment to their organisation.

Cerys was part of our first ever intake of degree apprentices into E.ON and she is a fantastic example of the success of our programme and how with hard work, enthusiasm, and self-determination a degree apprenticeship can open doors and opportunities to a very bright career.

Simon Duncan, Director of B2B Solutions at E.ON and Cerys' mentor, thinks that Cerys epitomises how apprentices can make a big impact on the organisation itself as well as the industry as a whole. He says, “In four short years Cerys has shaken our business, committed to learning more about our industry while accelerating her development. More than just a learner, Cerys has transformed teams and set new benchmarks for ways of working. As an ambassador, coordinator, leader, and change initiator, inside and outside of our organisation, Cerys has been an exemplary model of influence and delivery."
