Senior Leader Apprenticeship

Already an experienced manager at Derby City Council, Tom was keen to continue stretching himself and developing his professional skills. Encouraged by his line manager during his annual supervision, he took on the challenge of the Senior Leader apprenticeship at the University of Derby.

The apprenticeship journey

For Tom, the apprenticeship was not just about gaining another qualification; it was about growth, challenge, and perspective.

I was encouraged to do the Level 7 Senior Leader apprenticeship by my line manager; it felt like the right step to take for my professional growth.

Building skills and confidence

Studying alongside people from across the private sector, charities, and other local authorities gave Tom new insights and broadened his understanding of leadership in different contexts.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was learning how to apply business frameworks directly to his role. The Marketing in Organisations module helped him understand the value proposition, market segmentation and the marketing mix concepts he later used in meetings to articulate local authority strategy more clearly.

“The Marketing in Organisations model helped me grasp the concept of the value proposition; I was able to articulate what this means in an LA context.”

Tom was also particularly proud of achieving 80% in the Information Systems module, a personal milestone that boosted his confidence in academic study at postgraduate level.

The learning went beyond knowledge as it gave him the time and headspace to reflect, develop and build confidence.

Leading with impact

As Commissioning Manager for the Home to School Travel Service, Tom’s role was already wide-ranging, from overseeing contracts and supplier payments to managing appeals, budgets, and Freedom of Information requests. The apprenticeship provided him with new tools and confidence to enhance his leadership in this complex environment.

“I value my employer choosing to spend some of the levy on me. It felt like an investment in my development and will hopefully bode well for my future with Derby City Council.”

Advice for future apprentices

Tom was honest that some modules were challenging, especially as they were more geared towards private industry. But the challenge helped him grow; the support from tutors and mentors was invaluable, and he valued the balance between academic study and practical workplace application.

“ I would recommend this apprenticeship to others if given the opportunity.”

Looking ahead

Tom aims to secure a more senior position as Local Government Reorganisation came into effect. The apprenticeship gave him the knowledge, skills, and belief to pursue that goal with confidence.
