Mostafa Abdelshafy

Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

Software Engineering Degree Apprentice Mostafa Abdelshafy has been recognised as one of the region’s brightest talents, winning the prestigious title of West Midlands Degree Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2025.

Celebrating success

Third-year Software Engineering Degree Apprentice Mostafa Abdelshafy has achieved the West Midlands Degree Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2025.

“To even be considered among so many talented apprentices was humbling, but to win it for my region feels surreal.”

This remarkable achievement highlights his dedication, innovation, and leadership both within and beyond his role at Rolls Royce.

When Mostafa joined Rolls Royce as part of the first-ever Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship cohort, he had no prior coding experience. Determined to succeed, he immersed himself in learning and quickly began to make an impact.

I felt behind, but I made a commitment to learn fast, work hard, and give back at every opportunity.

Over the years, he has contributed to cost-saving DevOps and automation tools, developed safety-critical aerospace software, and undertaken cybersecurity risk assessments for future Rolls-Royce processors.

Beyond his technical work, Mostafa has made a lasting difference by mentoring younger apprentices, leading T Level placement programmes, and supporting STEM outreach activities across the UK. His passion for helping others develop and succeed is what truly sets him apart.

Reflecting on his journey, he described his experience as one defined by learning fast, working hard, and giving back wherever possible.

“What I’m most proud of is the impact beyond my technical work, including mentoring younger apprentices, leading T Level placement programmes, and supporting STEM outreach across the UK."

Professor Stephan Reiff-Marganiec, Head of the School of Computing at the University of Derby, praised Mostafa’s achievements, noting that his boldness and ambition have allowed him to open doors for both himself and others. He highlighted how inspiring it is to see learners like Mostafa evolve into leaders who support the next generation of apprentices.

It always astonishes me how much apprentices achieve beyond their programme, and Mostafa is really bold, ambitious and opens doors for himself and others. It is amazing to see our learners to become leaders to the next cohort in the short span of a year.

Looking ahead

Mostafa’s success builds on previous recognition, having received Rolls-Royce’s Birmingham Yellow Belt of the Year Award in 2024. He will also represent Rolls-Royce once again as a national finalist at the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards later this year.

Looking ahead, Mostafa will represent both the West Midlands and Rolls-Royce on the national stage for the National Finals of The Royal Navy Degree Level Apprentice of the Year Award.
