Construction Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Course description

Construction Site Managers play a vital role in the construction and civil engineering industry. They are involved in all aspects of construction activities within the sector and can be involved in a wide variety of projects across different sectors. These projects can vary greatly in size, complexity, and purpose.

The BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Apprenticeship) programme aims to equip apprentices with a solid grounding to practice successfully as a construction site manager. It is distinctively structured with three main themes and incorporates strong elements of Construction Manager professional practice via design, management, and interdisciplinary practice. The academic delivery is structured to meet the Construction Site Management degree apprenticeship standards.

The programme is aligned with the University’s value of being a Civic University and the academic theme of Net Zero. It addresses the skills gap by involving initiatives supporting the city and county’s long-term economic growth and prosperity, improving people's life chances, and developing a pipeline of talent who choose to live and work in the area. The proposed programme will focus on sustainability and intend to embed UN SDGs within the curriculum.

The BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Apprenticeship) programme academic award offered is designed to underpin degree apprenticeship standard requirement in Construction Site Management, where employees of approved companies undertake a structured training and experiential learning programme, whilst studying for the Honours degree. The degree apprentices on the BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Apprenticeship) Programme will undertake skills development in their employment to fulfil the professional context requirement for the apprenticeship, CIOB and RICS to be ready for their end point assessment.

The design and structure of the BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Apprenticeship) degree programme recognises the University’s Mission and strategy regarding research and portfolio development. It is designed to provide an academically challenging and vocationally relevant degree, which encompasses all the issues involved in the management of the construction projects and encapsulates the professional context requirement by the CIOB and RICS.

The academic programme has been designed with a flexible and dynamic mode of teaching, which provides all apprentices the opportunity to experience a range of learning opportunities including conventional methods such as lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops as well as industrially based projects aligned to local industry.

This academic programme specification concentrates on explaining the academic study included in the degree apprenticeship. BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Apprenticeship) offered through Construction Site Management degree apprenticeship standard Construction site management (degree) / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, which is approved by the government. Structure, certificates and assessment

The Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship equips apprentices with the technical, financial, and managerial skills needed to succeed in cost and contract management across the construction and civil engineering industries. Apprentices combine paid employment with university study, gaining practical experience while working toward a professionally recognised qualification.

The degree apprenticeship integrates 80% workplace learning and 20% off-the-job study through lectures, seminars, site visits, and online learning so that you can relate and apply your learning into practice with the workplace.

The 20% off-the-job learning includes:

The degree apprenticeship forms part of the 20% “off the job” learning. You may also have in-house training courses and preparation for assessments and examinations that will also contribute towards the 20%.

The 80% ‘on-the-job’ learning activities would be designed with The University of Derby and your designated workplace mentor and will depend on your specific job role with your employer.

To facilitate designing of such activities, each module specification has a list of ‘indicative work-related tasks’ for your degree apprenticeship. These learning activities would be undertaken in your workplace to complement and inform the 20% off-the-job learning. Your workplace mentor will support and monitor these activities. These will also be reviewed at meetings between yourself, and your workplace mentor.
