Gift Aid increases the value of your donation by allowing the University to reclaim basic rate tax on your gift. Donating through Gift Aid means the University of Derby, which is a registered charitycan claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. It will not cost you any extra.

How Gift Aid works

The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by individuals who pay UK tax. You must pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax for each tax year (6 April one year to 5 April the next) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that the University of Derby will reclaim on your gifts for that tax year. Gift Aid donations are regarded as having basic rate tax deducted by the donor therefore the University of Derby is able to reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 you give.

Paying enough tax to qualify for Gift Aid

Your donations will qualify as long as they are not more than four times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6 April to 5 April). The tax could have been paid on income or capital gains.

Higher-rate taxpayers

If you pay tax above the basic rate, you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and the basic tax rate on your donation. Do this either:

  • Through your self-assessment tax return
  • By asking HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to amend your tax code

Notify us

You must notify the University of Derby if you:

  • Wish to cancel your Gift Aid declaration
  • Change your name or home address
  • No longer pay enough tax on your income and/or capital gains

See www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities for further information.
