Jasmine King

BA (Hons) Fashion Studies

Class of 2008

We are proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of our Alumni Jasmine King, Founder and Creative Director of Kin and Cloth, a design-led children’s clothing label that is redefining kidswear through sustainability and innovation.

Beginning her journey

Jasmine chose to study at Derby after completing two years of Tailoring training with the Midlands top tailoring tutors, then moving onto an Art Foundation course. What attracted her to Derby was the opportunity to spend her third year gaining hands-on experience in the fashion industry through a dedicated placement year.

“It was a good path to find out what my strength and weakness are."

While gaining a realistic understanding of the fashion industry, she later returned to complete her final year with a catwalk collection.

I learned my skills of creating garments from my mother, and my sister who was exceptional at tailoring. Sadly, my sister passed away and I continued with my studies. I was always being encouraged by my parents, especially my mother, who was a seamstress. My home was where I learned about recycling garments, so it has always been instilled in my roots.

Since completing BA (Hons) Fashion, she was offered a role within a menswear design team and gained further skills within other design teams. Jasmine has gone on to make a real impact in the fashion industry, not only for herself but for the next generation who are showing a hunger for creative learning.

Her brand challenges fast fashion by reimagining waste textiles and unwanted garments, alongside carefully sourced textiles to create styles both children and adults enjoy. Designs are handcrafted into high-quality pieces, whilst always working to deliver sustainable styles - proving that creativity and responsibility can go hand in hand.

Key achievements

Jasmine has achieved remarkable success in her journey so far, with achievements that highlight talent and impact.

This is a huge leap from the challenges I once faced. I want students to know that even when times are tough, stay focused and try to keep moving forward - you never know where your journey might lead, to maybe one day inspire someone else.

Inspiring students

Jasmine’s work goes beyond her clothing line. Through Kin and Cloth’s creative workshops with local children, she shares the value of making, teaches the importance of craftsmanship, and highlights the possibilities of reuse and recycling. She is helping to shape the next generation of makers and inspiring young minds to become thoughtful stewards of the fashion industry.

Jasmine encourages current and future students to persevere and believe in their journey towards their purpose - you will hopefully get there by being consistent.

The University of Derby gave me the foundation to step into the design industry. Now, as a finalist for these prestigious awards, I hope my story inspires others to hold onto hope, create a positive impact and stay focused whilst working towards their purpose.

We couldn’t be prouder of Jasmine and all that she has achieved, whilst she continues to seek funding for the business to create an even greater impact. As she prepares for the next stage of the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards, we’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.
