Kevin Nix, HND Motorsport Technology & BSc Applied Technology, 2005
What are you doing now?
After graduation I applied for a position with a top tyre supplier within Formula 1 as I had the right qualifications and skills to take on a role as an Assistant Tyre Engineer. My career progressed and I moved to Pirelli Motorsport where I am now a Senior Tyre Engineer, currently working with the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Team.
My role involves collecting and analysing data from the team, advising on tyre usage and feeding this information back to our Research and Development facility based in Milan.
I travel worldwide and have direct communication with some of the best engineering and design teams running the current Formula 1 race cars, plus I have close involvement with top race drivers including Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen to maximise feedback for our trackside race engineering department and maintain product support through race weekends.
What were the main reasons you took that course?
Initially I wasn’t too bothered about going to university but after several conversations with my friends and family I decided to go ahead with my passion for motorsport and look at getting a permanent career within the industry.
I found the right course for me at the University of Derby and after a visit I knew I had to go and do it for myself. I was a mature student so it was quite a step for me at the time as I had been out of the education system for a few years. After completing the HND Motorsport course I finished off with an extra year studying on the BSc (Hons) Applied Technology.
Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?
I chose Derby as I lived in Nottingham and so it was convenient for me to travel to. It also offered the right mix of practical and theoretical work plus the lecturers had a wealth of motorsport experience to support the learning taking place in lectures.
What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?
Without going to the University of Derby I would not be in the position I’m in now, with an excellent career in a high profile sport that many people only dream about being involved in.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
All my lecturers were a massive influence on taking the course to start with as I had a good feeling they were the right people to be teaching me and helping me choose the correct path to go down.
What are your future plans?
To continue being involved in motorsport, as it is my passion, with a view to move to other areas of tyre technology or engineering to broaden my knowledge.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
I would recommend anyone interested to come and complete a motorsport course at the University of Derby as it has an excellent reputation. It’s also expanded the number of courses available in this area considerably since I was a student including Foundation level degrees to Masters in Motorsport.
Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?
A few fellow students and lecturer Steve Hill.
