Edward Hollands - College of Business, Law and Social Sciences - University of Derby

Ed Hollands, BA (Hons) Business Studies, 2015

What are you doing now?

I’m running my own business, it offers advertising space on commercial trucks from HGV’s travelling across the country to Luton vans travelling across a town or city.

Funnily enough my walk to university for lectures inspired the idea. Walking along the A38 to the Kedleston Road campus opened my eyes to the number of blank trailers on the roads. Spotting a bus covered in ads a while later, I suddenly realised if I was to advertise I would want to pick the truck as it gives better impression of the business and it can reach an audience normally out of reach to advertisers.

It’s been going really well and I have had interest from a range of companies large and small. The first few campaigns will be on the road very soon.

What were the main reasons you took that course?

I went to university mainly because I had no idea what I wanted to do, I wanted to run my own my own business but I had no idea in what industry. Studying Business Studies was a good fit that well as I thought it would give me the skills to thrive in the world of business.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

It’s hard to explain exactly but when I visited Derby it felt like home, all of the other universities I visited just didn’t fit. Schools (well my school especially) drilled into you that you should go to the place that feels right for you, I didn’t get that feeling until I came to Derby.

I think if I had attended any other university I would have returned home at the end of my studies, despite the fact that all of them were closer to home.

What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?

The course has had a massive impact in many ways. From the confidence I gained, the lecturers pushing you to succeed and the friends I have made helped me explore my business ideas.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

It really depends on the lecturer; some bring the theory to life with their real world experiences, which makes a difference as you can see it in action. Some help you use the theory to create a real world example, so you actually are doing what you would if you were at work.

The rest it’s just their teaching style; it’s not boring, you are fascinated and so find out more without being told to. That’s really helped developing my entrepreneurial skills researching potential ideas in detail.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

The University has helped me develop confidence which has led to me starting my business.

What are your future plans?

Run “The Advert Man” successfully and hopefully in the future I’ll start a few more businesses, I have the entrepreneurial bug now - watch out Richard Branson! I am one of those people that just can’t sit still!

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
