Dan studied BA (Hons) Travel & Tourism Managament and graduated in 2010.
Getting a job after university
Dan is currently employed as a Marketing Executive at Visit Peak District & Derbyshire Destination Management Organisation, the official tourist board for the Peak District.
Dan started the role straight after graduation which involved a very steep learning curve as he was thrown straight in at the deep end from day one. He managed a large print project to attract visitors to attractions as well as maintaining and updating the Visit Peak District website which receives in excess of three million hits per month.
Since then he has been exposed to a wide range of aspects of the tourism industry including; trade shows and exhibitions, attending PR events, one of which led him to spend a day on the Orient Express during the London 2012 Olympic Games, networking with international journalists keen to hear what else England has to offer. Dan has also presented business tips and advice to tourism business owners, and worked on cost effective strategies for maximising the value of travel trade.
His role has seen him delivering a three year government backed Regional Growth Fund marketing campaign through VisitEngland. This will involve a high profile billboard poster campaign supported by digital media, and working in partnership with major brands including Alton Towers, Northern Rail and Go Outdoors.
Studing at the University of Derby Buxton
Dan’s experience at the University of Derby Buxton was invaluable as it helped him achieve so much in such a short space of time. His academic studies have underpinned his work to date but it was also the experience gained from working on projects such as the Devonshire Dome Visitor Experience, as well as undertaking work experience with his current employers back in 2008, which helped him get his foot in the door.
