Austin Bradshaw BA (Hons) Marketing, 2002
What are you doing now; tell us about your role and your journey since graduation?
I set up and am the President for North Shore Flag Football League (NSFFL) based in Beverly, Peabody, Massachusetts, USA. I established the NSFFL to run youth flag football leagues on the north shore of Massachusetts where around 6000 children from 15 communities participate annually.
After graduating from Derby in 2002 I moved to the USA, got married and started a family. During 2004 while teaching in the Higgins Middle school in Peabody, Massachusetts, I completed the state testing to be certified as a full time teacher and taught Special Education for three years at the Community High school where I was awarded teacher of the year. In 2009 left teaching to concentrate on growing the NSFFL.
What were the main reasons you took that course?
I started at the University of Derby as a mature student at 21 and although I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take going forward, I’d always been interested in marketing so chose to study the BA (Hons) Marketing at Derby.
What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?
It has had a huge impact on my career as everyone I came in contact with at the University - lecturers and fellow students - helped me get to where I am today.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
We had some diverse classes, with students from all walks of life, with lecturers keeping their sessions interesting for everyone which motivated us to think for ourselves.
How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?
My experience at the University of Derby helped me in so many ways and not just academically. I was involved with many university sports and also worked at the Student Union bar for several years – I still have my bar supervisors badge!
The University offers so much more than just studies; it was the whole package that shaped the way my life is now.
What are your future plans?
Keep growing the NSFFL; we are currently the 5th largest youth flag football league in America and we are going to continue to grow, get better at what we do, and touch as many lives in a positive way as possible.
