Nadia Issadeen, Marketing, 2008
Nadia tells us about her time at Derby
I first joined the University in 2004 as an International Student. It was the first time I was miles away from home and on my own. During my undergraduate year, I was heavily involved with the Students Union becoming the President of the International Students Society. I was a candidate for the Union Elections during my final year and also represented the University in Badminton and Archery. After graduation, I worked at DHL returning to Derby to study my Masters in Management which I completed in 2010.
How Nadia's studies helped her progress
When I returned to Sri Lanka at the end of 2011, I worked in marketing and advertising as an Accounts Manager. As a result of gaining my qualifications from Derby I was successful in applying for the position of Brand Manager in the leisure division of Dilmah - world renowned tea exporters. I market Ceylon Tea Trails, the world’s first tea bungalow resort and Sri Lanka’s first and only Relais and Chateaux resort plus Cape Weligama, a 40 villa luxury property which will open in early 2014.
My studies have helped me get a good job, given me confidence in how to interact with diverse audience, deliver informative presentations and most importantly settle into a working environment.
My future plans definitely involve returning to Derby “Someday” but currently I want to pursue my career in the leisure industry. Having tried many different career paths, this industry suits me perfectly and means I could be based anywhere in the world.
Thank you to the University of Derby for helping me make the most of my university life. If there’s one thing students need to consider is university years are the best years of your life so make the most of it. I sure did!
