Lucy Sayers - College of Arts, Humanities and Education - University of Derby

Lucy Sayers, MA Education, 2016

What are you doing now?

I am currently teaching English at Jiangxi University of Technology in Nanchang, China.

What were the main reasons you took the course?

The main reason behind me studying a master’s in Education was because I wanted to pursue a specialist area of interest in TESOL. I also felt that the master’s enabled me to build a programme which would reflect my own unique interests and be intellectually rewarding.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

I chose to study at the University of Derby as I had already studied my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Studies there and therefore I was familiar with the education department and the lecturers.

What impact has studying the course at Derby had on your career?

This course enabled me to meet other specialists in my field of interest, which opened up lots of different opportunities for me, and helped to expand my knowledge.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

Rose Schofield inspired me because she made me realise that achieving your dreams is possible, you just have to believe in yourself and remember you have the answers you need within you.

Jennifer Marshall inspired me through her stories of living abroad. She encouraged me to take this internship opportunity in China.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

The University of Derby has been very supportive of my career so far. Even though I am no longer a student there, I am still in regular contact with a number of lecturers from both my undergraduate and my masters, and I know that they are only an email away if I need any advice.

What are your future plans?

For now, I would like to continue teaching English abroad, I plan to try teaching in as many countries as possible and have as many different teaching experiences as I can. Eventually I would like to work in a UK based university, where I would like to develop some research around teaching English, international education or second language acquisition.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

I would recommend this course to anybody with a passion for education. You have the freedom to create a course that suits you, so no matter how extravagant your areas of interest might seem, the MA at Derby can make studying them possible and who knows where that might lead you in the future.

Who are you still in touch with from the University of Derby?

I am still in touch with Jennifer Marshall and Rose Schofield.
