Asad Moghal, English Literature and Creative Writing, 2014
What are you doing now?
I was lucky enough to land a month-long internship with Marketing Derby, the month I finished my degree. It introduced me to the world of inward investment and Derby’s business community.
After my internship ended, my role became a full time position.
There isn’t really a standard day in the office; my day can range from meeting people from the media to discuss PR opportunities; to monitoring and creating PR campaigns; to organising a range of events, including local, national and international events; to writing a range of copy, including speeches, scripts, online advertising, press releases and invitations; to networking and general admin duties – it really is a varied role!
What were the main reasons you took that course?
The reason I took my course was simple – I loved literature. I didn’t do a degree that I knew would necessarily guarantee me a job, I did a degree I knew I’d enjoy. To me it’s important to follow your passion.
What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?
My course stressed the importance of research and independent work, and in this industry those skills are vital.
Research is a key part of my day-to-day job; it’s important to be aware of what’s happening in the market place, and be a step ahead. You need to use your initiative and make sure whatever you do is a success.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
The lecturers at Derby kept pushing me further; they would encourage me to read around a text and take in whatever I came across. Everything you read can inform a decision later on, my lecturers stressed this important principle. I’ve brought this line of thought to my job and it’s served me well.
How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?
I actually got my internship by looking at the University of Derby Careers’ website, so it played a big role!
What are your future plans?
To carry on this journey I’m on and see where life takes me.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
Do it! The University of Derby has great lecturers, facilities and a brilliant student support system; there aren’t many other universities that actively encourage their students to prepare for their future careers.
Derby is also a great student destination; there are many brilliant bars, restaurants, clubs and cafes, as well as number of great festivals including Feste and the Derby Book Festival. No other city has a business community that supports the university like Derby does.
Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?
Through my line of work I’m still in touch with a lot of the staff from the University, as well as a handful of great friends.
