Drew Davis, BA (Hons) Film Studies, 2014
What are you doing now?
I’m a Director of Future Proof Films, a video production company that specialises in creating stunning corporate video content. We’ve created work for companies such as the BBC and Oracle, completed projects for clients in three continents and filmed all over the UK and Europe.
We’re a closeknit company so we each share a lot of roles and responsibilities but I mainly focus the creative side of the company, so filming new projects, animating and editing videos for clients, as well creating engaging ways for our company to progress and grow.
What were the main reasons you took that course?
Quite simply, I love films. Whether it’s a movie on the big screen, a beautifully crafted TV show or even just a cinematic advert, I’ve always been in love with the moving image. Studying film, with the chance of making my own, felt like a natural choice.
Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?
I’ve lived in Derby all of my life and I have a real soft spot for the city and surrounding areas, so I knew I wanted to stay close when I went to university. I also knew people who had been to the University of Derby to study Film and they each praised it. So it was a no brainer!
What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?
My time at the University of Derby was instrumental in where I am now. Each day at work, I’m putting everything I learned at university into practice. Had I not gone to the University of Derby to study, I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am right now.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
Simply knowing that I was being taught by lecturers who shared in my absolute passion for film was very inspiring to me. Many of the lecturers were very ‘plugged in’ to the film community in Derby, which also inspired me to get involved with it too.
How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?
After finishing University, one of my first freelance jobs was creating video content for a Derby based organic beauty product company and I got this job as an internship through the University. This gave me a great leg up as it padded out my portfolio, gave me some great experience and most importantly, it was paid!
What are your future plans?
Future Proof Films is continuing to grow. We’ve just moved into our first office and we’re hoping to start expanding very soon.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
Get stuck in and really immerse yourself in the lectures, as well as the local film scene too. Pick up as much knowledge and experience and as many contacts as you can whilst you’re there.
Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?
I’m still in touch with a few lecturers and classmates, including fellow filmmaker Guy Russell, who now writes for Midlands Movies, covering and reviewing all things film.
