Travelling to Derby by bus

The Unibus

The Unibus is a great service for everyone that links all the University of Derby sites, the main halls of residence, Derby city centre, Markeaton Park Park and Ride and Derby train station.

The Unibus is partly subsidised by the money generated from car parking charges.

In September 2017 we made the Unibus free for all University of Derby Students and Staff upon production of a valid University ID card.

The Number 4 - Markeaton Shuttle bus

The No.4 is a free service for staff and students who travel between Kedleston Road and Markeaton Street/Britannia Mill. It runs all year and calls at the Markeaton Park Park and Ride during undergraduate teaching weeks. The No.4a makes sure there are frequent buses at the park and ride.

It is a new accessible low floor bus.

Route No.4 Timetable

After 6pm the No.4a continues to provide a free service between Kedleston Road and Markeaton Street (End Pybus Street)/Britannia Mill stops for students and staff.‌

The Number 5 (Unibus 5)

The last day of operation for the No.5 is 30 June 2018.

Following a review of the first year of operation of the Unibus as a free service, it has been decided that from Saturday 30 June, the Number 5 Unibus will be discontinued in order to allow further enhancements to the very popular Number 6 service. The free travel offered by the Unibuses has been a resounding success with students, seeing an increase in use of nearly 60% along the routes which serve our halls of residence.

Now that Lonsdale hall of residence has been sold, the Number 5 bus no longer serves any University student accommodation. In order to ensure that the University’s travel resources are best used to serve the largest number of people, these will instead be redirected to improve the Number 6 frequency and capacity, which has seen a huge increase in usage. Students who currently live in private property on the route from the Rowditch will be able to walk to Friar Gate to catch a greatly enhanced Number 6 service, while students at St Christopher’s Court will still be able to catch the Number 7 service from opposite the Halls (20 minute service), or the Number 4 from outside Britannia Mill. Users of the current Number 5 service can make use of other high frequency public transport options which will connect with the Unibus Number 6 route.

The Number 6 (Unibus 6)

Following the cancellation of the No.5 service, we are please to announce that from 2 July 2018 there will be a significant improvement to the No.6 service. Holiday services go from hourly to half hourly. Study/Interim services improve from 20 mins to 15 mins. The Term time service improves from 12 minutes to 10 minutes.

The No.6 connects the Kedleston Road site with halls, the city centre and the train station. Everyone can use Unibus 6, and it is Free for University of Derby Staff and Students. It runs every 10 minutes in term time and less frequently outside of term time.

NB From 18 June - 30 June the old Holiday Timetable will apply with peak enhancements (Leaves Station on the hour and Ked Rd at 43 past the hour)

Additional Departures from the station will occur at 0730, 0830 and 0930

Additional Departures from Kedleston Road will occur at 1713 and 1813

The Number 7 (Unibus 7)

The No.7 is a term time only fast link to several of the Halls of residence.

The No.7 is also free for University of Derby Staff and Students.  It runs during term time, during the working day, every 20 minutes on a circuit from Kedleston Road, Along Ashbourne Road past St.Christophers Halls, then outside Princess Alice Court (a short work from Sir Peter Hilton Court and Nunnery Court) and then Peak Court, before returning along Kedleston Road to the main site. This bus allows for an extra 3 runs an hour during the working day.
