What we do
We are a small team based in the HR Department responsible for developing, delivering, implementing and reviewing the University's Equality and Diversity strategy.
Lesley Bradshaw - Head of Equality and Diversity
Nicola Adler - Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator
Policy and Strategy
We produce the University's Equality and Diversity Strategy and Action Plan) in consultation with staff, students and stakeholders. In addition, we produce the Equality and Diversity Policy, Equality Risk Assessment and Equality and Diversity Annual Report.
Support Groups and Networks
The team supports the various equality groups and consultation networks. We also represent the University at external equality meetings such as the Derby Equality Network and the East Midlands Universities Equality Network.
We run regular consultation events in addition to the equality group meetings. We also put items for comment on our consultation intranet page.
The University is required to carry out equality impact assessments on all its policies, procedures, guidelines, plans, projects, strategies and key business decisions. We run regular development sessions and practical workshops to help staff undertake equality assessments. Statistics to help staff carry out these assessments can be found on the statistics page.
We have developed a comprehensive equality and diversity development framework detailing training sessions which help employees be aware of the important aspects of equality and diversity. As part of the development strategy, new employees are asked to make themselves familiar with the content on the equality and diversity website, attend central induction and undertake the on-line equality and diversity training module.
The team recognises the important link between equality and diversity and health and wellbeing at the University. That's why we work closely with the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team on topics such as:
- Occupational Health
- Access to Work
- PEEP Guidance
- Employee Assistance Programme
We celebrate the diversity of the staff and students at the University by organising a range of events throughout the year. Find out what's on through the staff iD page.
Guidance and Support
We have produced a range of guidance and factsheets on equality and diversity which are available on the University's intranet site.
There is an Equality and Diversity Champion in every College and Professional Department who sit on the University's Equality and Diversity Committee
Disability Co-ordinators are available in every College and Professional Department
Faith advisors are based at Buxton and Kedleston Road and can be contacted through the Chaplaincy.
We regularly monitor the equality and diversity profile of our staff and students. We monitor staff by recruitment, sickness, training and leavers amongst other things. The anonymised statistics are published in the Annual Report and also disseminated to Faculties and Departments via the HR Business Partners. Anomalies in the data are investigated by the relevant equality group
