£13.5 million 'green' transformation of Kedleston Road site
Transforming the towers at Kedleston Road, Derby - our main site.
The towers being constructed in the 1960s
We refurbished the towers between 2008-2010 so they look more contemporary and are three times more energy efficient, reducing our overall carbon footprint.
This was done by replacing 1960s single-glazed windows and thinly insulated walls with heat efficient glazed panels. It's estimated this will roughly halve the gas and electric bills and reduce energy wastage.
Renewable energy
Solar energy panels will also be fitted to the South Tower and a wind turbine placed in the student's car park area, as part of a bold experiment to use alternative energies.
The refenestration project will have a basic cost of £12.7m, plus around a further £600,000 to be spent on more environmentally friendly energy generation on site.
The whole project will be finished by January 2010.
