The University of Derby Buxton Campus

 Welcome from the Dean

HRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall officially opened the University of Derby Buxton (UDB) in February 2006, as a centre of excellence in the delivery of both Further and Higher Education. The Faculty is sited in Buxton's Dome (which at over 150 feet in diameter is larger than St. Paul's Cathedral), with Further Education post 16 and adult courses within Buxton College and Higher Education degree courses within The School of Culture and Lifestyle.

The Faculty's vision is 'to deliver the highest quality of student centred experiential learning, providing all students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills within real working environments'. This vision is summarised in the Faculty's strap line of 'Real World Learning' (RWL). In order to maximise the students' employability skills, the Faculty seeks to deliver RWL in environments and facilities that closely replicate the world of work and so we operate a high quality restaurant and bistro, a spa, hair and beauty salons etc. We also ensure that our students have plenty of opportunities to work with employers and to this end we have launched an employability portal.UDB's strategic aims are:
• To be the UK lead deliverer of high quality, student centred, experiential learning;
• To be the employers' first choice as an educational/training partner;
• To be a national lead for collaborative projects (with employers and other agencies), which are geared to regenerating local economies.

UDB has adopted the approach advocated by the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship, for the creation of entrepreneurial universities, educators and students. In doing so the Faculty recognises that the success of the University in Buxton and the economic success of the host community are inextricably linked and so we have launched our Project 2012 Pledge, which commits the Faculty to delivering '2012 hours of voluntary activity into the local community between December 2010 and the launch of the 2012 Olympics'.
