Facilities at the Buxton Campus
The University of Derby Buxton's campus is truly inspiring, and as a student you'll be studying in amazing facilities and amazing surroundings
Millions of pounds have been spent on our facilities in recent years, including our most recent developments our newly acquired 58 acre outdoor centre - Oaklands Manor and our Sports Centre at Harpur Hill.
Our spa facilities are unique and offer you real world learning as part of your programme, which students also experience in our amazing restaurant and hair and beauty salons. Within each subject area there are real world experiential learning opportunities for students such as;
» Beauty and spa
We have our own spa, a purpose built training and treatment spa facility, with a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, dry flotation and hamman tables, Spa at the Dome, which was shortlisted for UK Day Spa of the Year award 2008.
- We're the only university that has its own dedicated training spa and hairdressing salon. You'll experience working with paying clients to really boost your confidence and skills.
- Our beauty and hairdressing salons are fully equipped with the most up to date equipment and use only the finest products, to make sure you get top quality work experience which will be great for your career.

» Events Management
We can offer you lots of opportunities to put your learning into practice, and gain work experience at events:
- Each year our students host the National Student Events Conference, involving speakers from key organisations in the industry.
- You'll have the chance to organise local and national events for charity, and experience our on site conferences and exhibitions.
- You can run your own events, or work as a consultant on projects for real clients in our events consultancy company, The Dome Events.
- You can get involved with local events, and larger festivals. This year 30 students worked at Glastonbury Festival, we also had students working at the Y Not festival.
- If you're studying public relations you'll get the chance to work on real PR campaigns for local and national companies and charities.
» Hospitality
Our mix of training and commercial facilities makes sure that you'll leave with the skills employers are looking for. We've got:
- Seven industry standard kitchens, using the highest quality ingredients, so you'll be prepared to work in the finest establishments.
- Plasma screens in our kitchens, so you'll get a great view of techniques being demonstrated.
- A bistro, and The Dome Fine Dining Restaurant, serving paying customers, so you'll get to experience working in a professional environment right from the start.
- We have excellent work placement links with leading employers in the industry, such as Gleneagles, Crieff hydro, Engineers Country Club (New York), Breadsall Priory and Stapleford Park.

» Outdoor, adventure, countryside and ecotourism
Oaklands Manor is 58-acres of mixed woodlands, a 30 foot high climbing wall, a complex high ropes course including a 'leap of faith', three low rope courses, an artifical underground caving course, dry stone walls, broad leaved woodlands and moorland landscapes; will be your classroom.
Our campus is in the heart of Peak District National Park, which contains some of Britain's best countryside and outdoor facilities:
- We are surrounded by some great climbing areas, including the Roaches, Stanage Edge, Burbage Edge, Yarncliff, Castle Naze and Alderly Quarry.
- We also have our own climbing wall based at our Harpur Hill Sports Centre as well as a dedicated Outdoor and Adventure campus building.
- You can go canoeing and kayaking in the River Derwent and Combs Reservoir, where we have a partnership with the Sailing Club.
- Students have also worked with British waterways to improve part of the Peak Forest Canal.
- You'll have the chance to go on trekking trips to Morocco and France, develop your winter skills in Scotland, and go white water rafting in North Wales.
» Sport
The University's sports facility at Harpur Hill, in Buxton, has undergone a £1.5m refurbishment.
The facility, used by Buxton Campus students, has 1,300 square metres of space, including:
- a new look sports hall
- improved changing rooms
- state of the art outside climbing wall
- three new classrooms.
Ian Willgoose, University Director of Estates, said: "The Harpur Hill refurbishment is another important stage in the University's improvement of its sports facilities.
The Buxton Sports facilities have been improved to ensure that your experience on our sports courses gives you all you'll need to be ready for work and your career, with lots of work opportunities to make sure that you have the experience you need when you graduate.
Our sports facilities encompass a wide range of equipment including a fitness suite and sports lab, with purpose built classrooms and a fully equipped sports hall and climbing wall.
As a Buxton student you will also be able to draw on our wide range of local sports facilities and regional sports clubs including the Buxton and High Peak Golf Club, Buxton Football Club and Stockport Football Club. Our new sports facilities and our commitment to local provision mean that you will have a flexible real work learning experience.
You'll also gain a professional qualification during your course which can be the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management Certificate or the British Cycling awards.
Get ready for work
We've developed our courses with employers, so you'll develop the knowledge and skills needed in your career.
There are lots of practical sessions and field trips, so you'll be able to put theory into practice. Buxton and the Derbyshire Peak District is a fantastic setting for understanding and developing practical and managerial sport.
We will also provide you with an opportunity to do a placement either in the UK or abroad, something that would look great on your CV.
We are a World Centre of Excellence
The World Martial Arts Council (WMAC) has recently been made a Centre of Excellence in Martial Arts. The President of the WMAC, Alan Foster, said: "To improve the standard and delivery of martial arts coaching we joined together with Buxton's academics to develop scientifically rigid assessments and programmes."
» Travel and tourism
You'll get first hand experience of the tourism industry:
- Buxton itself attracts many visitors, and is situated at the edge of the Peak District National Park, which is a major tourist destination.
- Buxton and the surrounding areas host many festivals, events, and opportunities for land and water based activities.
- We offer fieldtrips both in the UK and abroad, so you can put your learning into practice.
- There are many tourism related businesses in the Peak District, so you'll have lots of chances to gain relevant work experience.
Not forgetting
You'll also be able to use our library and with its flexible learning spaces and quiet rooms, Student Union shops and offices as well as training facilities including seven industry standard kitchens.
All these facilities mean that when you graduate you'll be ready for work and you'll be sure to have all the up to date skills you need to progress in a fantastic career.
