I liked that I was not just a number but all the tutors knew my name
”I came here because I always wanted to study abroad. I came to the University of Derby in Buxton to do my final year in BA (Hons) Travel and Tourism Management as I had previously studied with Innsbruck Tourism College in Austria which is in a partnership with this university. I entered my course and liked that I was not just a number but all the tutors knew my name and the classes were quite small. The tutors take time to meet and discuss any issues which is also why I decided to progress to the Masters in Tourism Management. The Masters has lived up to my expectations and I really don't regret my decision.
Once I have finished my Masters I would like to travel for a bit with my sister and apply some of the theory I have learned while being in Buxton. After my travels I would like to be in a job where I can combine work and travel. Before I settle down I would like to explore the world!
What is life in Buxton like for me?
Monday
I usually get up around 9 or 10, and then I go to the library to work on my assignments or my dissertation. In between working I have a coffee and catch-up with my friends. In the evening I might go to the pub for a meal or stay in with my house mates to watch TV. I might also go to Manchester for shopping since it just gets too busy on Saturdays.
Tuesday
Generally this is a day which I dedicate to my assignments. I prefer to do this in the library since there are too many distractions at home, and I can go through the journals and online articles more efficiently. I then go to bed early to be ready for the morning lectures on a Wednesday.
Wednesday
I have lectures all day starting from 10am until 1pm. Then there is an hour lunch break where I catch-up with my friends and at 2-5pm I have lectures again. It is quite a tiring day so I go back to my house, cook dinner and enjoy going out for a student night in town.
Thursday
I have a lie-in until about lunchtime, and then I grab something to eat and spend the afternoon in the Pavilion Gardens, our beautiful park in Buxton, if the weather permits. In the evening I usually go on 'Skype' with my friends and family.
Friday
Today I get up early, go for a run around Buxton and then I head over to the library to finish my course work. I stay there until 4pm and then I go back to the house to cook with my house mates. In the evening we like to go to one of the pubs or bars nearby for drinks.
Saturday - Sunday
These are my two days off from university so I prefer not to do any course work. I would have a lie-in and spend time in our garden if the weather is nice, or go on a trip with the Multicultural Society. I also try to fit in my laundry at some point over the weekend. My British friend sometimes makes a really nice roast dinner for the rest of us in the house on a Sunday. Then in the evening I go out for drinks with my friends at the local pubs or bars.
