Social Action

Let's do something about what we think's wrong with the world and, instead of being part of the problem, be part of the solution!

Sorry Richard, they're not for you!

Fundraising

Last year we raised funds for Christian Aid, Village Aid, and sports projects for young people.

Fairtrade

The University of Derby is proud of its Fairtrade status. The issue here isn't about raising funds, but making sure that people in the world's poorest countries, supplying us with the basic commodities such as tea, coffee, cotton, etc, get a living wage for their work in the first place so they don't need charity. The University tries to buy products with the Fairtrade Mark to show this is the case. The Chaplaincy encourages the University to keep its Fairtrade status and always puts on events for Fairtrade Fortnight in March.

Christmas

Last Christmas the Chaplaincy encouraged staff and students to donate hundreds of new gifts, which were distributed to needy people in the local area through the Salvation Army.

Red Cross "Positive Images" Project

We help to train students who want to become peer educators, running sessions about exiles, migrants and asylum seekrs for their fellow students.

Christian Aid Week

During Christian Aid Week we raise money for some of the very poorest people around the world. Last year staff and students sponsored the 44 pillars holding up our Dome, to symbolise their support for the people of Sierra Leone, where the average life expectancy for women is just 44 years.

If there's a charity or campaign you think we should be supporting, come and talk to us about it!
