University Vehicles

Typical pool cars

Before you drive any vehicle on business for University of Derby you must register as a driver. This process takes around an hour. You can arrange it through the transport office (extension 1115). After registering, we will need you to show your licence to the Transport staff an annual basis. If you don't do this, it may result in you having to re-register to drive.

Driving a University vehicle

When you have completed the driver registration, you will be able to drive our pool cars and small vans on University Business.

Pool Cars are recommended for all driving on business, as this minimises risk and is more cost effective than mileage claims for most trips out of Derby.

We require any staff transporting students to do so in a University vehicle.

Further training is required for you to drive a Luton Van, and a medical, training and tests are required for you to be eligible to drive our minibuses.

Driving your own vehicle

If you do decide to use your own vehicle on University Business, you must ensure that the following is in place, as conditions for use, in order to meet your legal and procedural obligations:

  • You are insured to drive that vehicle for business (be aware if you are a named driver - most business cover applies only to the policy holder)
  • The vehicle has current documented servicing to industry standards and a current MOT certificate
  • The vehicle is checked prior to the trip. See daily checksheet (Word, 76kb)
  • The Universitys code of practice for driving at work (Word, 302kb) must be adhered to.
  • Students cannot be carried in your own vehicle

Planning a journey

If you are travelling a long distance by car, then it is a good idea to check for traffic delays. The Highways Agency provide detailed traffic information at www.trafficengland.com which even includes live motorway CCTV images.

In extreme weather conditions, please consider whether your journey is absolutely necessary before setting out. If so please take care. We recommend you read this advice leaflet for driving in severe weather conditions (PDF, 1.48Mb).
