Driver training
Driver registration
This is pre-requisite for anyone who intends to drive on University business. It involves the following elements:
- Driving Licence Check (all sections of your licence are required)
- Completing registration forms
- Powerpoint presentation about driving on university business
The training session takes an hour. Sessions are run regularly in Derby and Buxton, according to demand.

Defensive driver training
If you are a high mileage driver, you will be asked to undertake this course which is run by ROSPA. This is a very practical course, which has been extremely well received and enjoyed by all who have taken part. For more information, please contact Human Resources on extension 1036.
Van driver training
Before driving a large van for the first time you are required to undertake basic training, which entails the following:
- Advice on driving a large vehicle
- Assessment of competence driving a large vehicle (further training is provided if deemed necessary)
- Instruction on how to safely use a tail-lift

Minibus driver training
There are professional drivers available to undertake minibus driving duties.
If you passed your driving test before 1997 then you should have the D1 minibus driving category on your licence. In these cases you will have to undertake and pass the MIDAS training to drive minibuses.
If you passed your driving test after 1997, we require you to undertake and pass the D1 PCV driving test.
In all cases you will have to pass a medical to DVLA standards prior to undertaking training. Please contact the transport office for advice on this matter.
MIDAS training
Having passed your medical, and received your licence back, acknowledging this, you will be in a position to arrange MIDAS training with the transport office. MIDAS training involves:
- In depth training on the principles of minibus driving
- Practical advice
- A Practical Test
Minibus (PCV) - D1 Category
Having passed your medical, and received your licence back, acknowledging this, you will be in a position to start training.
The amount of training required will depend on the standard of your driving.
There is a theory test and a practical test that are arranged through DVLA.
