Parking FAQs
» How do I apply for and receive my student permit?
Eligible students should apply for permits at the Student Support Centre help desk or an application can be downloaded from our website. Applications will be checked and permits can be collected or sent in the post within 5 working days. Essential car parking information is available at www.derby.ac.uk/student-parking .
» How much will student car parking cost?
Students who are eligible to apply for a parking permit on site can apply for a silver permit which has no cost; however it identifies to the security staff on site that the car is allowed to park but must display a pay and display ticket.
- Costs to pay and display are:
- Up to four hours - £1.90
- Over four hours - £3.80
Other students will be able to buy a permit for the Markeaton Park and Ride for £57 a year (there's a free bus trip from there to our teaching sites).
Please note changes to pay and display costs. The changes are driven by the need to keep public transport costs lower than car parking. Any surplus income will be declared and reinvested into public transport and other travel plan measures, which will help make alternatives to the car more widely available to people who are travelling to University sites.
» What if I am not eligible for a permit on site?
If you do need to travel by car, you can apply for a permit at the Markeaton Park and Ride. This costs £57 a year. However, there are a limited number of these permits available.
You can save even more by Car Sharing.
» Who can use the Markeaton Park and Ride?
We ask that all students and staff first consider the use of alternatives to the car.
If you cannot easily do this, then you can apply for a permit at the Markeaton Park, Park and Ride (regardless of whether you're eligible to park on site or not)
We have a limited number of permits available.
If you live at a Hall of Residence please DO NOT apply for this permit as it is much more convenient to catch the bus from outside the hall and you will be taking the opportunity from someone who needs it more than you.
» At what times during the day do I have to pay for a ticket?
The times the car park is under pay and display conditions are from 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. If you are parked in the car park during this time you will need to have a permit to park and a valid ticket for silver and day permit holders.
» Do all vehicles have to pay?
Yes, all vehicles will need to pay, with the exception of pre-booked visitors who park in the visitor car park.
» Can staff park in the student car park?
No, staff must park in the designated staff car park – rear of the site. If staff do park in the student car park they will be liable for a Parking Enforcement Notice.
» What happens if I do not have the right change to put in the Pay Machine?
Please ask the car park attendant who will be only too happy to help (or you can pay by phone – please see signs for details).
» Can students move between sites in their own vehicles?
No, there is no student parking at either Britannia Mill or Markeaton Street. Students who have permits must park at Kedleston road and either catch a shuttle bus or walk between sites.
» What if I come to the site by motorcycle?
There are designated parking areas and parking charges do not apply.
Currently Helmet and kit lockers are available to motorcyclists at Kedleston Road from the transport office for a refundable £20 key deposit
» Can I claim a refund if I no longer need my permit?
A refund is only available if your permit has not been used. Apply at the Student Support Centre with your name and address and return the original permit along with your home address and a refund will be issued. This is only if you have not used your permit. If you have used your permit then you are not eligible for a refund.
Unfortunately no refunds are available for Markeaton Park and Ride (MP) permits.
» What happens if I do not pay?
Nobody is permitted to park on site without a parking permit or without paying the parking fee (with the exception of pre-booked authorised visitors in the visitor car park). Car park attendants will speak to people face to face and/or apply notices to offending vehicles.
If you do not have a valid permit or are not displaying a pay and display ticket you will receive a Parking Enforcement Notice (PEN). The notice carries a £80.00 cost reduced to £40.00 if paid within 14 days. Details of methods of payments will be included with the Parking Enforcement Notice.
In extreme circumstances, and only with the specific approval of an appointed Manager of the University, persistent abusers of the system may have their vehicles wheel clamped. In such cases a fee will be charged for the clamp removal. Signs around the site will detail the charges applicable.
» Am I guaranteed a space?
No - spaces are subject to availability, however our car park management company, CP Plus, will endeavour to identify to arriving drivers where spaces are available. With the normal flow of traffic on the site and the controlled issue of permits, it is unlikely that all spaces will be occupied at any one time.
» Do I have guaranteed security?
Unfortunately it is impossible to eradicate all vehicle crime, so, as with all car parks vehicles are parked at your own risk.
However the use of CCTV coverage and regular staff patrols mean that the University has an excellent record on car crime.
Significant investment has also been put into the Markeaton Park and Ride, securing CCTV, new high standard lighting and council warden foot patrols.
» Are there special areas for disabled users?
Yes, there are adequate disabled parking bays throughout the site located to accommodate a variety of easy access points. Our car park management company ensure that these spaces are not abused.
» What if I have two or more cars?
Each permit is able to hold up to two car registration numbers – so you would need to transfer the permit between the vehicles.
