Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is a vital part of developing competent, capable health service practitioners prepared to deliver a dynamic, flexible, quality, client-focused service. If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands then you may be eligible for fee-free access to our LBR modules and/or programmes. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply.
About this module
This module is aimed at applying your understanding of the management of patients that fall. You will need to have completed the Assessment, Prevention and Management of Falls module prior to studying this module.
Healthcare and exercise professionals working with older people must have opportunity to apply and integrate the theoretical concepts of falls prevention and management within the clinical/work based environment. You will be encouraged to critically review the assessment, prevention and management aspects of falls in order to enhance your clinical practice for the benefit of the client, practitioner and clinical unit. The aim of the module is for you to develop safe standards of practice in a clinical setting and critically evaluate current practice.
You will study the role of health behaviour in the management of falls, the application of intervention strategies and the establishment of an integrated falls and fracture prevention management service. This will include:
- Determination of client movement and other aspects of health behaviour that affect the assessment, prevention and management of falls. This will include factors affecting lifestyle and onset of secondary disease impacting on falls and fracture risk factors and review of the screening assessment tools, techniques and protocols used for measuring falls risk and physiological and psychological function.
- Consideration of the intervention strategies for the prevention of falls and falls related injuries including fractures within the clinical unit. This will include use of various pharmacological and non pharmacological approaches and lifestyle recommendation.
- A detailed view of falls in the developmental, strategic and operational aspects involved in establishing an integrated falls and fracture prevention management service co-ordinated across primary and secondary care settings. Role of multi-professional team and multiagency approach.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the differing clinical and community settings associated with falls prevention and management and consider how patients are effectively managed within clinical practice.
- Reflect on the prevention and management of falls and the prevention of fragility fractures within both primary and secondary care.
