Only a few laptop orchestras in the world

There are only a few laptop orchestras in the world, and Derby Laptop Orchestra (DLO) is the only one to have developed a new range of digital musical instruments with the help of graduate Tom Spenceley.

Sound from all angles

They used Wii game remotes to produce sounds reflecting the player's motions, or DJ turntables which control other digital musical instruments, rather than playing records, allowing them to produce three dimensional sound. This means the sound comes at the audience from all angles rather than just speakers in front or behind them.

We'll eventually be taking DLO out on the road.

A lecturer for Music Technology, Chris Wilson helped to set up the DLO said: "We will use this research orchestra to collaborate with experimental musicians, composers and sound artists in the area, and we'll eventually be taking DLO out on the road."
