The best facilities
With the move to our new Markeaton Street building, our courses offer excellent facilities and resources.
We have a number of dedicated auditoriums so there's plenty of space for music performance, sound and light rigging, and preparing multimedia events.
We have two well equipped recording studios that'll provide you with the opportunity for music production, or training in studio performance skills if you're a performing musician.
There are also a set of laboratories so you can study music and lighting technology, and experiment in psychoacoustics and music perception.
You'll also be able to use a range of industry standard music and multimedia software in our dedicated PC and Mac computer studios, so you'll be well prepared for the world of work once you graduate.
The courses in this grouping relate to music performance, music production, and the technologies of the sound system, the performance event, or of multimedia.
- For the performing pop musician, there is a course to develop practical performance, composing and arranging skills.
- For the aspiring music producer, there is the possibility to work with musicians in the studio, learning the latest techniques to produce recorded music to a commercially viable standard.
- For those who love the buzz of the live event, where deadlines must be kept and the show must go on, there is study in event technology - including sound, lighting, and venue design.
- Finally, and not least, there is study in multimedia technology, ranging from web design to the design of a major multimedia event, for example the launch of a new car model at a motor show.
In each of these areas a study of current practice is combined with careful study of the underlying principles. Staff expertise covers the complete spectrum of activity in these fields, and there is incredible energy generated by the interaction of these different activities. Staff are active both as teachers and as practicing professionals - as performing musicians, event designers, and lighting, sound or multimedia specialists.
Graduates have gone on to every type of professional activity, including appearing on Top of the Pops, equipment or system design, managing outside broadcast events, playing on cruise ships, teaching, lighting design, or event management.
