What is Formula Student?

Triumph have supplied the University with a 675cc 3-cylinder engine to use for Formula Student.

Formula Student, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is the world's largest student motorsport competition, challenging engineering students from across the globe to design and build their own single-seater racing car before pitting it against over 100 other teams at the world-famous Silverstone circuit.

Formula Student 2013 - which is celebrating its 15th year - will see more than 2,000 students from 32 countries pack out the Silverstone paddocks on 4-7 July. This year, 54 of the teams are from UK universities and there are more Indian teams than ever. A team from Oman will take part for the first time in Formula Student history - as well as teams from as far afield as Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Derby and Formula Student

This is the first time that the University will be competing in Formula Student. Our students have chosen to campaign in the Class 02 category.

More information about the categories can be found at: www.formulastudent.com

Our students have called themselves 'Drammo Engineering'

The team is made up of:

  • Project Leader: Matthew Day
  • Deputy Leader: James Busfield
  • Design Engineer: Alan Webster
  • Design Engineer: David Richardson

All members of the team are on the final year of our BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering course and this is the basis of their dissertation project submission.
