Students from our Architecture courses were asked to come up with proposals for the masterplan for a brownfield site in Derby by Derby Cityscape Ltd.

This is a 17 acre site on the banks of the River Derwent, in the city centre, being redeveloped for housing, hotel, retail and leisure uses.

Students were asked to brainstorm on real issues for the site. These included the different styles of buildings to provide the best use of space, and to consider environmental issues and any potential flooding risks.

The work was assessed by David Marshall, Development Director at Derby Cityscape, and prizes were awarded for the best projects. First prize went to BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and Practice student Ian Curran; with second prize going to Matthew White and third to Claire Carmichael, both of the BA (Hons) Architectural Venue Design.

Derby Cityscape and Derby City Council have been so impressed with the students' work that they involved them in another project to create a 3D computerised model to help with the location of tall buildings within the city, without negatively affecting the skyline as well as providing a greater visual insight to potential developers and investors.

Derby Cityscape's chairman Peter Richardson said: "For Derby's economy to grow retention of graduates, from the local University, is extremely important. I hope that, if only in a small way, the involvement with our work will encourage more students to choose to live and work in Derby."
