Details
- Date: Friday 8 February
- Time: 6pm-7pm
- Venue: Room OL2, University of Derby, Kedleston Road, DE22 1GB.
Dr Ian Turner will discuss the science behind the super powers of many famous heroes and villains such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wolverine, Wonder Woman, Iron Man and others during his public talk.
This talk is aimed at a younger audience so if you have young children aged (10 plus) then feel free to bring them along.
Dr Turner said: "I had always enjoyed reading comic books from a young age and because they are packed with science fiction, it is a great way to engage young minds with science. Research surrounding green fluorescent protein is fascinating as this science is being used in molecular biology to identify features in cells, it has also been used to 'colour' fish and animals.
Green fluorescent protein has significantly enhanced our understanding of key biological processes. The Hulk's legendary green skin is an obvious parallel to capture the imagination of kids. The entire lecture is very tongue in cheek, but will contain a strong scientific message and explain how some of the features of the best loved super heroes could be recreated in real life, and how other traits are simply science fiction''.
