Derby has been ranked as the third best place to live in the country*
If you like your cities small and friendly, Derby is a great place to be a student. It's easy to get to with great road and rail links, so it’s not surprising that big names like Toyota, Rolls-Royce and Bombardier have made it their home and support a thriving local economy.
In Derby city centre you’ll find a great mix of shops, from high street names at the intu shopping centre, to specialist retailers in the Cathedral Quarter. Several times each year you'll also find over 100 fabulous stalls at the bustling Derby Night Market.
We also have plenty of real ale pubs, lively clubs, cinemas and theatres to keep you entertained. Derby Theatre is owned by the University and students can get discounted tickets for performances throughout the year. Students studying on our BA Dance programme can also get free tickets for performances at Déda in Derby. Find out more on our Social Life pages.
If you love music, Derby has loads to offer, from impressive live venues to outdoor events such as the Download and Y Not Festivals.
For sports fans, the city has its very own velodrome – Derby Arena – and a proud sporting tradition with the iPro football stadium, home of Derby County, and Derbyshire county cricket ground.
Fancy getting away from it all? The beautiful Peak District National Park is only 30 minutes away.
Come and see for Derby yourself. Book an Open Day and spend some time exploring the city whilst you're here.
