What advice would you give to anyone that’s thinking of coming to study at the University of Derby?
You'll always be able to get advice from your peers and tutors, so don't worry if you're not sure of what direction or route to take - by the time you finish the course you'll pretty much know exactly what you want to do.
What are the main reasons for taking this course?
One of the main reasons for taking this course was that I’ve always had an artistic flair, and I thought this course would be the best way to express my abilities, to work on games and game art specifically.
What are the best things about your course?
It really allows you to express your artistic abilities, communicating with other people also interested in the same thing – that’s always a bonus. It’s just a really all round great course for me, specifically, being into art.
What have you enjoyed most about the course so far?
I enjoyed the final year most because one of the modules pretty much allowed me to do whatever I wanted to do. So I decided to create a vehicle because I’d never done that before, and I wanted to do something challenging.
Why did you choose to study the course at University of Derby?
I came for an Open Day originally, and I saw some of the labs. One of the programme leaders took me for a tour round the labs and I saw some of the stuff they were working on. I thought "that’s right up my alley", so I decided I want to get on that course.
How have you found the tutors in the support that they’re giving you?
The tutors have been very helpful. If ever I needed any help or assistance, they’re not too far away. They’ve always been there for advice, whether it’s been course related or personal issues.
Have you had any interesting guest speakers or lecturers?
We’ve had some really interesting guest speakers who are actually fresh from the industry, and they’ve been able to give us some really good feedback. They relate to the kind of work that we’re doing, so it was really helpful.
What do you think of the facilities and equipment?
The library is really good, it’s very resourceful. Specifically for my course, it’s great. Everything I need is here. They’ve got a gym, so sports facilities are great.
What would you like to do in your future career and how do you think university study has helped you towards this?
Throughout my final year at university, I believe I’ve honed on a lot of skills that would be useful for me in the position that I want to take up, as an environment artist within the games industry.
What do you like about the city of Derby and Derbyshire?
It’s good for meeting my friends and we go out for a couple of drinks, meet up, go out to a few bars, play pool. They’re fairly close together, all of the clubs and pubs, so you don’t have to worry about walking great distances.
How would you sum up the experience of studying this course at the University of Derby?
In all, my experience has been really good. It’s really enhanced my prospects in my future, and I hope to go further with my career thanks to Derby University!
