Postgraduate research degrees
You can apply for a research degree at any time of the year
Postgraduate research students are able to enrol at the University of Derby three times a year:
- Mid August to mid September
- The first two weeks in January
- The first two weeks in April
All enrolments are arranged by appointment once your application is successful. Please be aware that it can take between six and twelve weeks to consider a complete application.

New Route PhD
The New Route PhD is intended for recently qualified graduates with good honours degrees, who are keen to progress immediately to a research experience in their preparations for a career in which the ability to undertake research will play a key role.
MPhil/PhD
For MPhil/PhD programmes, we normally expect you to have a first or second class honours degree, a Masters degree from a UK University or qualifications that we consider to be equivalent.
The Faculty must also be satisfied that the candidate has the necessary command of the English language to undertake a research investigation.
Language requirements
The Faculty must also be satisfied that the candidate has the necessary command of the English language to undertake a research investigation. Copies of English language qualifications should be included where appropriate; please note that for research programmes a minimum of IELTS level of 7.0 or better is expected (Please note that English language certificates are only valid for two years).
