FAQs about your Open Day

Why should I come to an Open Day?

To get a feel for the place. You can't tell what a university is really like from its glossy prospectus. Coming to an Open Day means you can find out what it feels like and whether it's for you, and we're confident you'll notice our warm and friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in the door!

To find out more about your course. Subject talks are held at different times throughout the day, normally lasting about an hour. We also have academics on the college stands who you can talk to if you have any specific questions about the course you want to study.

To see our University, its facilities and accommodation for yourself. There are Campus tours, tours of specific sites and visits to University accommodation (halls of residence) running throughout the day.

We'll be coming by car, is Open Day parking available?

If you're visiting our Derby Campus:

You can park for free at the main site - Kedleston Road. This is where most of the Open Day activities are held. The postcode is DE22 1GB.

For courses in the College of Arts or the Department of Engineering, please park at Kedleston Road and make your way to the regular shuttle buses outside the main entrance and we will take you to our Markeaton Street site where you can register. Please note that there is only parking for blue badge holders at Markeaton Street.

If you're visiting our Buxton Campus:

You can park for free on the surrounding streets. The postcode is SK17 6RY.

I'm coming by train, how do I get to the Campus?

If you're coming to the Derby Campus:

We provide a free minibus shuttle service which will take you from Derby train station to our Markeaton Street and Kedleston Road sites. The first minibus leaves the station at 8.30am and will run every 15 minutes throughout the day. You need to make sure that you wait at the Pride Park entrance to the station and if you are visiting Markeaton Street, ask the bus driver to drop you off there. There will be plenty of people at the station and at our sites to help you if you need it, look out for our orange tops.

If you're coming to the Buxton Campus:

Our Campus is just a five minute walk from Buxton train station. Turn right outside the train station, walk past the Palace Hotel and turn right up Devonshire Road. You'll see the entrance of the Dome building (the main building on our Campus) on the left, through the car park.

Do I need to book or can I just turn up?

You can just turn up, but if you book a place online you'll be sent an Open Day guide about a week before your visit which includes details of what’s happening on the day and maps/directions on how to find us. It will also speed up the process when you arrive because we'll already have all your details and won't need to take them from you on the day.

What time does the Open Day start and finish?

General Open Days at both campuses run from 10am until 3pm, but the day is designed to be flexible. We recommend that you arrive around 9.30am to attend one of the welcome talks and then plan the rest of your visit around your subject talk, as not all of these are repeated. Other general talks tend to get repeated and tours of the campus or halls of residence run throughout the day, so it's easy for you to plan out your day. Don't worry if some talks clash - you can always talk to the academic at the faculty stand on a one-to-one basis.
