If you're a full time student you're not automatically exempt from paying council tax.
For your home to be exempt it must be one of the following:
- a student hall of residence
- any dwelling where all the students are full time students
- any dwelling which is left unoccupied by a student who has gone elsewhere to study.
You can get a certificate to confirm your student status to the authorities, from the Student Support Centres from mid-November onwards.
If your house is shared by full and part time students or there is a non-student living with you then you'll generally have to pay council tax. However, if the people you live with are on a low income, then this may mean your house is exempt from council tax.
