LGBT and mental health
For many LGBT students coming to university will be an exciting time and experience. Many students will feel that they can be more themselves in a university environment and this can be liberating. However, we are aware that there are also potential problems for our LGBT students and we are here to support you should these arise.
No matter what our sexual orientation, every one of us has the potential to fall prey to emotional or psychological difficulties stemming from a huge range of issues. For lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people, however, the sources of mental distress are, potentially, far more numerous.
LGBT people not only have to deal with the issue of coming to terms with their own sexuality or gender, but they also have to face the often homophobic attitudes and the lack of understanding of those around them. For this reason, they are at greater risk of developing mental health problems.
The University offers several sources of support for our LGBT students
Counselling
The University counselling service provides a free service to students to explore any issues that may be causing difficulty in your life. Find out more information about our counselling service.
Mental health
If you are experiencing long term problems with your mental health you may be entitled to some additional support. Contact the Student Wellbeing Service or arrange an appointment to come and see us. You can find our contact details here.
Chaplaincy
The Chaplaincy provides a safe place to discuss issues of faith and sexuality without judgement. The Chaplaincy is composed of chaplains from many Christian faiths and a team of Faith Advisors representing a variety of different faith traditions.
Student Union
Support and affirmation from your peers can be extremely valuable. The Student Union has a very active LGBT Society, which meets both for social occasions and to organise campaigns. You can find details about the society and how to join here.
The Student Union also has a professional advice service - The Source who can meet with you to discuss support and how you can help yourself settle in to university life.
You can also take some simple steps to help maintain your mental health.
