Postgraduate student funding
There is no statutory funding for postgraduate students.
Some postgraduate positions come with funding attached and are called 'studentships'. These can cover both fees and living costs but it depends on the institution you attend as to whether they are available.
If you have to find your own funding then the most likely sources are savings, work or other charities, trusts and sponsorships. You can check out websites such as the 'Hot Courses'and 'Prospects' for further information.
To find out if you can apply for funding from charities or trusts check out:
- The Educational Grants Directory
- The Charities Digest
- The Grants Register
- The Directory of Grant Making Trusts
These can be purchased from online book sellers or accessed via your local library.
Some learned societies offer help for postgraduate research:
- British (for humanities and social sciences)
- The Royal Academy for Engineering
- The Royal Society (Science)
There are sometimes privately funded scholarships usually offered through the University.
Career development loans
These allow you to borrow up to £8000 from a high street bank where you pay no interest while you study.
MBA loans
If you are doing a Masters in Business Administration you can apply for an MBA loan through the Association of MBA's.
You can find more information in our Postgraduate funding, trusts and charities section.
